In a couple of weeks, we will be celebrating C's THIRD birthday. I, for one, am in COMPLETE denial that he could possibly be THREE already, but am so excited to be working out the details for his party! C is a complete sports fanatic, and after tossing a couple of other ideas to him for what kind of party he might like to have, it was firmly established that sports would be the only route acceptable to our soon-to-be three year old sports fan. In case you're wondering what a three year old boy might like, here are a few ideas!

Golf Clubs // Train Set // Strider Bike // Tickets // Board Game // Scooter // Floor Puzzle // Subscription Box // Books // Football Helmet

Golf Clubs // C spotted these clubs for ages 3-5 on a trip to our local sporting goods store last week, and was all about them. T recently got new clubs and has been excited to hit the driving range, and C has taken note. Clubs for C would be a great father-son bonding activity that T & C could enjoy together for years to come.

Train Set // C has had the opportunity to play with this train set on some playdates this winter, and has been absolutely enthralled, making a direct bee-line to the trains. The little cars move on their own, and there are also additional tracks you can add to make this an even bigger set. Worth hours of entertainment for sure!

Strider Bike // As a family who loves biking, we'd love to get C started early with learning how to balance and ride a bike. These Strider balance bikes have super reviews, and after speaking with the local bike shop and having C test one out (he loved it and refused to leave the store), are definitely something that would be a great learning tool for future biking adventures (read more about them here). The biking experts maintain that teaching kids to balance on this bike makes for a super easy transition to actual biking, many times not even requiring training wheels. As C tends to be very VERY cautious, T & I are of the opinion that this may be the perfect route to go so that we never have to deal with training wheels! Fingers are crossed!

Tickets // This is a pretty general item on C's wishlist this year, and could mean anything from tickets to a live performance at Treasure Village or Bantam Boji to tickets to the Zoo or a major league baseball game. C loves to get out and DO things, and would no doubt LOVE any kind of adventure we could come up with!

Board Game // One of C's very favorite books is Cars and Trucks and Things that Go. He'd have so much fun with this accompanying board game and the 'find it' theme, and it'd be a great activity we could play together as a family for game night. 

Scooter // Cousin J received a scooter for his third birthday a couple of months back, and for C, it was love at first sight. He'd love to have this scooter so that when they are together this summer they can both scoot around and learn all the tricks!

Floor Puzzle & Subscription Box // C has been super interested in geography lately (probably in part to our recent travels and discussions about where other family members have been traveling). Combine this with his love of floor puzzles, and we have a perfect gift idea. I've heard awesome things about the Little Passports subscription box for toddlers, and think he'd have so much fun learning about different countries and customs. Such a fun way to introduce him to the world outside of our own town! There are also some other great subscription box ideas for young kiddos here.

Books // We do a LOT of reading at our house, and C can often be found curled up in his chair or on the floor with a good book. Now that he's a little older (and has most of his books memorized), it'd be fun to add a few 'big kid'...a.k.a. hardcover books with PAPER pages...to our collection. These (here, here, here) have been a few of our favorites from the library, and I know he'd love reading them over...and over...and over.

Football Helmet // C's love of the Iowa Hawkeyes runs deep, and he would absolutely LOVE to have his very own helmet. I spotted this complete uniform, and know it would become his most beloved outfit for gameday!

Birthday Wishes

I can't believe I'll be turning 31 next week! This last year has gone particularly fast, and as I watch C grow into a little man before my eyes, I am reminded on a daily basis of how fleeting time can be. I am looking forward to my 31st year, and am hopeful that we will find our groove as a new family of four and the year will be packed full of lots of adventures, snuggles, and love. Aside from a healthy and safe delivery...preferably as an early birthday gift...or maybe even a birthday twin (how fun would that be!?) here are a few things I'm wishing for this birthday.

Dress // I spotted this dress while browsing one of my all-time favorite places to shop...Anthropologie. Their clothing is such good quality, and I adore everything I've ever purchased. This dress has a great cut for a newly postpartum bod, would be easy for nursing, and be a great transition piece for fall with a jean jacket pulled over the top. Perfect trifecta! It just sold out in my size (M), but I'm hoping it'll be restocked! If not, there is always something at Anthro on my wish list!

Tory Burch Miller Sandals // I don't have a single pair of nude colored flat sandals, and these (makeup color, size 9) would go with just about everything. They are a splurge for sure, but I expect would also hold up for multiple seasons of use. You should see the reviews on these! Over 970 reviews and five stars. Clearly, these are a cult favorite! With any luck, they'll be on sale during Nordstrom's upcoming Anniversary Sale starting July 22.

Sarah Chloe Elle Bangle // I got one of these silver bangle bracelets after welcoming C into our lives, and have worn it nearly every day since. I'd love to have another bangle with our newest little one's first initial. Obviously...this one would not be able to be ordered until baby arrives and we decide once and for all on a name, but I'm willing to wait. :)

Kate Spade Orchard Street Hemsley Purse // This white purse is so cute, and would be a great summertime and vacation staple piece year after year. Perfect size for date night!

Jack Rogers Palm Beach Sandals // My current white sandals are near falling apart after wearing them pretty much every day this summer. These Jack Rogers (white, size 9 wide) remind me of something Jackie O would wear, and would be the perfect replacement pair for my current much loved, but very worn out, white sandals.

PB Classic Bath Towels // After redecorating our master bedroom this Spring, I'd love to replace the towels in our master bath that are looking a bit worn and ragged. Some of them have bleach spots, or are coming apart at the seams...literally...so it'd be great to update them with some new towels. I'd love to have eight total (four white, four gray mist)...along with a couple of each color in the hand towel size, and some washcloths. This bath rug (gray mist) would also be a necessary addition.

Darling, I Love You Artwork // I've had my eye on this wall art for the longest time, and would just love to add it to the decor in our home. I could see using the small 12x12 size (top here & bottom here) above the headboard in our master bedroom...mixed in with a family picture in the middle, or the large 36x72 set would be aaaaahmazing along the staircase in our main living space. Oh the possibilities!

All Clad D5 Stainless Steel 6-Qt. Essential Pan // My current skillet is completely shot from overuse (a.k.a no longer non-stick, and starting to peel), and I'd love to upgrade to this all-in-one essential pan that can be used for...well...just about anything. No, it is not hard anodized non-stick, but after reading about how horrible the black non-stick coating is when it peels into your food, I'm prepared to do a little more cleaning to avoid the consequences...not to mention, because of the shape of this pan, reviews indicate the sticking isn't too bad. In addition to the amazing reviews, this pan should last forever, and would be a great starter piece to a larger collection as my other pots and pans wear out.

Barefoot Dreams Drape Front Cardigan // I'm a sucker for cozy lounge clothes, and with a newborn soon to be joining us, this cardigan (S/M, pewter) would be super nice to have for throwing on over PJs, or as a layering piece this winter. Bonus, it's also a great style for nursing!

Second Birthday Wishes

As I sit here typing out this post, I can hardly believe the fact that C will be turning two years old in just a couple of short weeks. Where has the time gone!? As he gets older and grows more independent, and his future sibling's arrival draws nearer with each passing day, I am reminded to cherish every moment we have with him at this fun age. Here's a little list of some things I think he'd have so much fun with for his birthday this year.

Prince Lionheart Wheely Bug // C would be sure to have a blast on this tiger wheely bug (size large). He has outgrown his ride-on combine, and isn't quite ready for pedals or motor-operated toys just yet. This tiger would be fun for him to ride indoors, and would be great for working on balance and coordination.

Swing // When you are just two, but are the size of most three year olds, some toys just need an upgrade. C has reached the last few days he is able to use his outdoor swing that he loved so much last summer and fall. He's got such a long torso that the straps just barely go over his shoulders, and he'd definitely be more comfortable this summer in this standard toddler-sized swing.

Golf Set // C has recently discovered T's golf clubs, and is completely in love. The other night, he drug around a golf club in the driveway and front yard for a good hour before having a meltdown because it was time to go in the house. He'd have fun learning how to golf with Dad with this set, and would be able to take it to the golf course for a father-son golf outing.

Basketball Hoop // C absolutely LOVES to play ball, and would be sooooo excited to have his very own basketball hoop to practice his jump shot.

Broom Set & Vacuum // C is quite the little helper when it comes to cleaning...or should I say the main reason I spend half of my day cleaning to begin with! He loves to mop and help vacuum, and I have no doubt that these cleaning supplies his own size would be a sure hit.

Stearns Puddle Jumper Life Jacket // T & I purchased C a regular style lifejacket for boat rides and everyday use, but this life jacket is specifically designed for 'learning to swim', and would be great for using at the pool, YMCA, or swimming in the lake later this summer.

Plan Toys Dancing Alligator // C discovered a pull along toy on a recent mommy-son date, and he got a real kick out of watching how it follows and bobs along behind him as he pulled the string.

Little People City Skyway & Wheelies // A great indoor toy for rainy days and times when C's newest sibling and I need a minute of inside play. C has been all about his cars, trucks, and tractors lately, so he'd be sure to have fun with this toy.

Hope this helps those of you who have asked for a wishlist! If you have any other ideas, we would welcome anything that would be good for solo-play, sensory, or educational for a two-year-old. It's going to be a very VERY busy summer at our house, and probably like all soon-to-be mama's of two, one of my biggest concerns is how to make the transition from one to two kiddos go as smoothly as possible all while keeping C happy, busy, and entertained as we adjust to being a family of four.

Mother's Day Gift Ideas

Lately, as I've been flipping through social media feeds, browsing my favorite blogs, or chatting with other moms, I've come across many many stories and articles about motherhood. Unfortunately, not all stories are filled with happy endings, and I am constantly reminded to be thankful for each and every moment I have with my little. This season I'm in of trying my best to raise a young child, is incredibly challenging, and littered with everything from 'throw yourself on the floor tantrums' to sweet moments of bedtime snuggles and sloppy wet kisses. Some days seem endless, some I'm left wondering if I gave it my best, and others are so fun that when I glance at the clock I can hardly believe it's time for bed already. It's hard to believe that I've officially been part of the 'mom club' for almost two years now, and I can truly say that I wouldn't have it any other way.

Each moment is precious, and I'm so thankful to have the opportunity to spend my days with my sweet little C. Next weekend I'll be celebrating my second and last Mother's Day as a mama of one, and while these past two years have been quite the adventure, no doubt the memories we'll make in the coming year with another little person around will be even better! 2015 Gift Guide: Hers

My list of holiday wishes this year mostly revolve around fashion. When I find myself with a free minute, I love to shop, or in lieu of that...catch up on my favorite fashion blogs. When I can find time to shower and make myself presentable in between cooking, cleaning, exercising, running errands, or keeping C out of trouble (not as often as I'd like), I love getting dressed in something other than my standard daytime 'mom attire' of yoga pants and sweatshirt. Something about making an effort to do my makeup and dress nicely just raises my spirits and gives me joy. Key components to happiness, and a good focus for the new year! Without further adieu...my 2015 wish list.

Hunter Original 'High Gloss' Boots // No, these are not likely to keep my feet terribly warm during the upcoming winter months, but after winter comes spring, and along with it sloppy...slushy...wet...muddy...messes. These rain boots (size 9, black gloss) would be great for the inevitable...and sure to be fun...upcoming days of puddle jumping with C.

The North Face 'Nuptse 2' Vest // I'm all about layering lately, and this puffer vest (medium, black) from North Face would be a great addition to my closet.

Pearl Earrings // I've been drawn to pearls lately and wearing my fake version almost on a daily basis. I'd love to have some beautiful 'real' pearl studs for dressing up my everyday look. T - in case you're wondering...I'd like the same-ish size that my current pair are.

Show Tickets // It's been a loooooong time since I've been to a show (something I absolutely love to do), and after hearing nothing but amazing reviews, I'd LOVE to see The Book of Mormon. Lucky for me, it happens to be coming to Minneapolis this May. I'd love a pair of tickets and an overnight getaway to the cities!

Wildfox Catfarer Sunglasses // After scratching my favorite pair of sunglasses over the summer, I've been burning through cheap-o pairs ever since. I recently tried on these shades, and fell in love. I can't resist a good cat eye!

Black Booties // I've been on the hunt for the perfect pair of black booties all fall to pair with skinnies, leggings, and maybe even dresses. I think these Vince Camuto 'Hillsy' booties (size 9, black leather) are exactly what I've been looking for.

Columbia 'Kruser Ridge' Softshell Jacket // My fall/spring weight jacket leaves something to be desired as it's been pretty much worn threadbare. I came across this coat (medium, black) on a recent shopping trip, and think it'd be great to have for that 'what-do-I-wear' in between weather of fall and spring.

New Balance '696' Sneakers // I'm always on the lookout for a great pair of casual sneakers, and these (size 9, navy grey) make the cut. I just love the sparkly accents!

Born Julianne Black Flats // Still on my list...new black flats (size 9). Not exactly very practical in the middle of winter, but it'd sure be nice to have them stowed away for when the temps are back on the upswing!

Cozy Sweaters //  I love being all cozied up in a warm sweater during cold weather, and would love some new staple pieces to add to my winter wardrobe. I recently stopped in the Loft and stumbled across this loop stitch cardigan (medium) that is so unique and would be so cozy for curling up by the fireplace on chilly winter days (50% off today with CODE: CYBER50). This cowl neck sweater (medium, teal deep) would be perfect for wearing with leggings. I've also had my eye on this cozy cardigan (small/medium, mulberry) for the longest time, and imagine I could count on some serious snuggle time with C once he discovers it may even be more soft than his favorite blankets! Last, but not least...this cape isn't technically a sweater, but would be equally cozy this winter!

Watch // After wearing a watch most of my adult life, after my most recent timepiece bit the dust, I never replaced it. I love the modern look of this Kate Spade Monterey watch (30% off today! CODE: SHINE), and think it is a great option for everyday wear.

M.A.C. Gift Set // New makeup is always such a fun gift to receive, and this 'Enchanted Eve - Nude' gift set from M.A.C. has several items - and the right color!! - that I've been wanting to try out.

Holiday Dishes // I love the festiveness of some good holiday dishes, and these don't disappoint. The plain red Cambria collection from Pottery Barn would be perfect for mixing and matching with my everyday dishes for a little extra fun around the holidays. I'd love to start a collection that could multi-task and be used not only for Christmas, but also for Valentines or July 4th. Note: I'm not looking for the entire set, and would love just the dinner plates (set of 8) and soup bowls (set of 8). I also think these winter fauna salad plates would be super fun for accenting all-winter long rather than being specifically tied into Christmas.

2015 Gift Guide: Toddler

On to the fun stuff! C's holiday wish list. I'm not sure if there is anything more exciting than looking through toy departments and magazines filled with awesome kids toys. T is convinced he grew up in the wrong era, and I'm not so sure he might be right! Kids toys these days...it seems anyways...are so much cooler than when we were kids!

Anywhere Chair // C is his name, but snuggling is his game. This snuggly sherpa regular size anywhere chair (not personalized) is sure to be a hit with C for the hours he spends 'reading' the many books in his library. Also a bonus - it's lightweight, and has a slipcover lining that could be thrown in the wash if it ever got spilled on.

New Musical Instruments // C absolutely LOVES to play music. After receiving a drum set on his birthday, he has literally played with it Every. Single. Day. since. Earlier this week, at Time-Out-Nursery, when I went to pick him up, they had a box of musical instruments for the kiddos to play with, and HE. WAS. FASCINATED. I know he'd love to expand on his at-home instrument collection, and there are so many amazing option to choose from. In particular, he was loving these heavy-duty drums, and I think he'd have a blast with all of the options on this music center.

Bear Plush Rocker // C tested out a similar plush rocker at our local library the other day, and had so much fun. He is pretty curious about bears, and is all about anything soft and snuggly, so this rocker (not personalized) is sure to be a hit.

Guidecraft Kitchen Helper // C loves to help in the kitchen...a.k.a. be absolutely positive he's not being left out of anything important...and always wants to see what is going on above his head while I'm chopping veggies and getting dinner ready. He's not old enough to stand on a chair and know that he has to stay exactly where he is, so this kitchen helper would be great to keep him safe when 'helping' in the kitchen. Even better...it folds up and can be stored away when he's not using it!

Athletic Gear // C could use some new athletic wear for winter, and I'm loving this 'electric blue' UnderArmour warm-up set (2T, Amazon - Also found in-store at Scheels, not available online). Speaking of Scheels, they also have an Iowa Hawkeye warm-up set (2T) that would be perfect for celebrating the Hawks winning the title this year :) :) :)...Here's to wishing! Also on C's list...a new pair of plain black Nikes, Nike Flex (size 7, Amazon) or Nike Free 5.0 (size 7, found at Nike outlet for less $). If you have a mind to shop for clothes, I expect he'll wear size 2T until spring. Plain clothing without screen prints or graphics are preferred for mixing and matching with other items in his closet (unless athletic gear).

Wood Blocks // C is all about knocking over blocks. It'd be great to have a wood block set that he could use to learn to build towers, towns, or anything his little imagination desires in the new year.

Farm Equipment // C would love a few new pieces of farm equipment for his collection. He's particularly fond of pushing around the BIG heavy-duty tractors just like the one he got to ride in with Grandpa and his uncles this fall.

Collapsible Tunnel & Ball Pit // Collapsible wintertime fun at home?! Yes please! When the question of suggestions for indoor wintertime activities for kiddos was recently asked in my mom's group, several mom's suggested that a bounce house at home during the winter has been a huge hit in their homes. I have a bit of an issue with entire rooms being eaten up by toys that are not easily stored away, so I'm not completely sold on this idea...yet...but after watching C climb through tunnels at the park this fall, and play in a ball pit at Time-Out-Nursery, I think he would have so much fun with this collapsible tunnel & ball pit at home during the long winter days ahead!

2015 Gift Guide: His

Staying on track with holiday wish lists, I give you T's list. This year, hunting gear and new technology are right at the top. It can be hard to pinpoint the perfect wish list for T since he doesn't usually ask for much, but I think this is a pretty good compilation. If anyone is in the know about how to get the Hawkeyes to a National Championship game, that's really the main thing T is wishing for this holiday season!

KUIU Camo // Super Down Jacket (XL, vias camo color) and Super Down Pant (XL, vias camo color, OK with solid color). T has been freezing in his tree stand lately, and wants to add some more insulation under his hunting gear. He'd also love a pair of these scent-proof merino (XL) socks.

Ivation Long Range Wireless Thermometer // T has been wishing for a thermometer that will sound an alarm when his smoker temperature goes above or below a certain temp while he is sleeping. Originally thinking he wanted one that had an app available, he's changing he tune after realizing he'd still have to be within a set distance from his smoker. This thermometer from Ivation not only measures the temperature of the smoker, but also has a second probe that measures the meat temperature. Win. Win.

Sorel Caribou Winter Boots // It has recently be brought to my attention, after T borrowed his dad's boots this week, that T does not own a pair of winter boots. How this is possible living in NW Iowa, I'm not sure, but the fact remains. No. Winter. Boots. This pair from Sorel (size 13, 'bruno' color) would get him all set up and ready for the winter ahead.

Food Saver // Still on the wish list this year, T would like the FoodSaver V4850 to seal up delicious leftover smoked meats. This model has awesome reviews, and would be great for avoiding freezer burn.

iPad Air 2 // T's iPad stopped working a couple of months ago, and he is completely lost without it. He'd love to get back into his groove with a new iPad.

LaCrosse Alphaburley Pro Side-Zip Real Tree Xtra 1000 Gram Hunting Boots // T is convinced that he needs to have rubber hunting boots to better control the scent while hunting. He did actually put a little effort into researching the perfect pair...with a little steering from brother-in-law N...and specifically landed on this pair.

Leupold RX-1200i TBR Rangefinder // T would love to have his own rangefinder for hunting. He's been borrowing his dad's on occasion, but the dynamic of two hunters-one rangefinder doesn't really work. This one comes highly recommended from T's brother-in-law N, hunter extraordinaire.

Reed & Barton 'Windsor' Julep Glasses // Still on the list from last year! Apparently not a passing phase...T would like to have a pair of these pewter mint julep glasses for sipping the official drink of the Kentucky Derby...you know...the one day of the year that it happens.

45 lb Dumbbells // T would like to expand on his at-home weight collection. A.K.A. He thinks he's buff. On his list this year are two 45 lb dumbbells. Good luck getting them wrapped and under the tree! In a list of other items not in T's current wardrobe, these sweatpants (size L) would be be great for staying warm during winter workouts.

Patagonia R1 Fleece Pullover // After adding a black R1 Patagonia fleece to his collection earlier this year, T has been wearing it on the reg. His everyday wardrobe would benefit from another color choice, and I think that both the grey forge and navy colors (size XL) would look nice on him.

2015 Gift Guide: Stocking Stuffers & Secret Santa Ideas

Ahhh...the holiday season is upon us. It is currently a white out outside, and it had me thinking with Thanksgiving less than a week away, I should probably start to put some serious thought into holiday wish lists. Sometimes I think it's so easy to get wrapped up in searching out the perfect holiday wish list, that some of the smaller and more reasonably priced items on my list go without mention. Not every gift has to be a 'big ticket' item, and little packages often pack just as much punch and excitement upon receiving as the bigger items. Here's a list of some little things I'd like to find in my stocking or under the tree this holiday season!

Lakeable Perfume // Buy Local! At a recent mom's group meeting, we had a guest speaker come from Okoboji Skincare and talk about makeup, skincare, etc. She recently created this all-natural perfume that is inspired by scents found around Lake Okoboji. After smelling it, I've got to agree, it evokes memories of warmer days spent by the lake, and is a great everyday scent that I'd love to add to my perfume collection.

Shiseido Benefiance Intensive Eye Contour Cream // I've recently been experimenting with different skin products, and after being told by the kind lady at the Estee Lauder counter that current recommendations by beauty experts state that we should start using eye cream at just 16 YEARS OLD, I'm feeling about a half a lifetime behind the game. This cream from Shiseido has awesome reviews, and I'd love to add it to my daily skincare routine.

The Dreamer Flannel PJs // I'm a sucker for new PJs, and would love this new flannel pair (size medium, red/green lurex plaid) from Victoria's Secret. I just love how festive they are!

Kendra Scott Makeup Bag // My current makeup bag is about eight years old, and completely falling apart. No jokes. I LOVE how this one has built in storage for makeup brushes, and a separate area for makeup products. Bonus...it's currently 50% off!

Laura Mercier Spiced Rose Lipstick // I LOVE myself a good lipstick, and my go-to color of choice has recently been discontinued. I think this spiced rose color is gorgeous, and is a great somewhat 'nude' color for everyday wear.

Sonoma Lavender 'Snow Leopard' Neck Pillow & Slippers // On a recent trip to the spa, I was blown away by the amazing calming effect of a warmed lavender scented neck pillow. This would be just the thing to help me relax and recenter at the end of the day after dealing with all of C's wild and crazy toddler antics all afternoon. The matching slippers are cute too!

Wolf Designs Chloe Zip Jewelry Case // I'd love to add this good quality 'zippered' jewelry case to my travel must-haves. We are honestly on the road about 3 out of 4 weekends in the month going here or there, and my current jewelry case just doesn't get the job done (doesn't zipper shut, and is always popping open spilling jewelry). I love the layout of the compartments in this case, and think it is just the right size for travel.

Sigma Beauty Brushes // I recently started using brushes to apply my makeup, and am completely amazed at how much they make a difference. The brushes I currently use are not very good quality and always shedding, so I'd like to upgrade to some better quality brushes. The specific brushes I'd love to add to my collection are: Sigma F80 (foundation), Sigma F86 (under eye concealer), Sigma F70 (small concealer), Sigma F10 (Powder/Blush), Sigma E55 (eyeshadow), Sigma E45 (eyeshadow crease).

Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer // Keeping with the makeup theme...I keep seeing this product from Smashbox popping up on various beauty blogs, not to mention it has amazing reviews. I'm curious to give it a try and see if it's all it's cracked up to be! I do currently use a lid primer...and believe it is an absolute must-have when wearing eyeshadow. Mine is starting to run low, so I'd also love to try this Smashbox Photo Finish Lid Primer.

Headband, Scarf & Gloves // The crazy snow coming down today has me wishing for new winter accessories. I love the light blue color of this headband/scarf/mitten collection from Loft, and think it'd look cute for tromping around outside on our outdoor adventures this winter.

Paddywax Bergamot & Mahogany Candle // I love myself a good smelling candle...(after C goes to bed usually since it's proven to be too much of a distraction to eating, playing, getting anything done besides exclaiming 50 times about how 'hot' it is)...and think this Bergamot & Mahogany scented candle from Paddywax smells great. There's also a scent I love from Pottery Barn called Winter Woods, but alas, it isn't available online.

Construction Zone

Ahhhh life in a new neighborhood... At our house, we have a bit of a love/hate relationship with construction zones. There are currently six separate homes being built within a stones throw of our house, a couple of which are directly next door and across the street, and a total of 16 new homes...18 if you count homes waiting on landscaping...within about a mile and a half radius that are in some state of construction. We live in a newer neighborhood, so this is to be somewhat expected, but lately it certainly seems like there is an overwhelming number of construction vehicles rumbling by our house! Dump trucks, excavators, cement mixers, skid loaders, and cranes...oh my! You name it, it's probably gone by our house within the last 24 hours. C, being a young boy who is fascinated by big diggers, has been loving watching all of the commotion from his bedroom window and off our back deck. These diggers come at a price though, and nap time has been touchy at best with all of the banging around right outside of C's bedroom. Not exactly what you want when you have a one year old with a broken leg and doctor's orders to get lots of rest!

Earlier this week when one of the construction sites directly near our home decided it would be a great idea to work well past dark moving dirt around and dumping rocks with a skid loader, I'd had enough. T was on call, C had already missed nap time due to all of the construction work, and with all of the continued banging around outside his bedroom window was having a terrible time getting to sleep. Keep in mind that C also has a broken leg, and is supposed to be getting plenty of rest. Letting his nighttime sleep be so obnoxiously interrupted was just more than I was willing to deal with. So, with no end in sight...I called the officials to see what our options were. I was hoping there would be some city ordinance about residential construction work hours that could be enforced. Unfortunately, it seems that our town allows construction work in residential neighborhoods until around 10 p.m. (UNREAL!), so with all other options exhausted, I ended up having to file a noise complaint to get some peace and quiet so C could get the quality rest he needed. Add that to a list of things I never thought I'd do. Welcome to the neighborhood! Things we do for our kids...

The Big 3-0!

Sooo....I have kind of a BIG birthday coming up in just over a week. Hard to believe I'll be the big 3-0 this year! Everyone thinks that hitting your 30s is this big deal to be mourned about (insert all of you perpetually 29 year olds out there!), but honestly, hitting 30 doesn't bother me at all, and I feel like I'm exactly where I should be. The first 30 years of my life have been pretty amazing, and I can't wait to see what the next 30 bring! Here's a little sneak of what's on my birthday list...

New Sneaks // Most days, my go-to daytime wardrobe is a variation of workout tops and black shorts/leggings/pants. Hot summer weather, outside exercise, and a little one who slobbers all over = a need for quick drying gear that can easily be wiped down. I'd love to have some new sneakers so I could switch up my routine a little. These printed Air Pegasus '83 sneaks (size 9) or these printed Roshes (size 8.5) are so cute with their flowery print, and would be fun to tie in specific colored tops or wear with jeans and a basic T. These dark grey Roshes (size 8.5) could be worn on a daily basis with pretty much everything in my closet making them a sure go-to shoe.

Sunglasses // My good pair of sunglasses got a scratch on the lens almost a year ago, but I've been wearing them anyways. I'd love a new pair of quality shades, and like the sporty classic look of Ray Bans. I'm currently leaning towards these or these, but probably need to go try them on in person to be sure which ones fit my face shape best. Ahhh...the perils of living so far away from the closest retailer. 

Flats // My current black flats are completely shot as they have been through a few too many seasons. These black flats from Born would be the perfect update going into late summer and early fall weather. I'm also loving these perforated silver flats from Olukai. (Size 9)

Clarisonic Mia 2 // I've heard so many good things about this facial cleansing system, that I'm completely sold on trying it out. My current skincare routine of the nightly makeup remover wipe and occasional full face wash just aren't going to cut it any more. I have a serious dislike of washing my face at the sink because it makes a huge mess all over the countertop and floor and I end up feeling like it would have been easier to just take a full shower rather than mop up all of the water that drips off my arms. This brush would help contain the splashing, and be the motivation I need to transition into a better daily routine.

Sephora Gift Card // Now that I'm officially about to leave my 20s behind, it's very important to me to invest in a better skincare and beauty routine. Something about the loss of pregnancy hormones and the accompanying glow, and the appearance of fine lines has me itching to try out some skin brighteners, peels, anti-aging serums, eye creams, and facial hydrating oils. This along with the fact that at my latest trip to the spa (thanks to a great Christmas gift from T), left me feeling like I have a skincare routine that is beyond inadequate. There are about 20 different products I'm dying to try, and a gift card would be just the thing to get me on the right track.

Black Dress // Along with upping the skincare routine, I've been working on weeding out my wardrobe and focusing on quality rather than quantity. When I'm not sporting my workout gear, you can almost always find me wearing a dress when the weather is agreeable. I'd love to add this dress (size 8) for late summer and early fall.

Digital Keyboard // The always on my list wish...a piano...ahem...digital keyboard. As much as I'd love to have a baby grand complete with a music room overlooking the lake, this just isn't in the foreseeable future in our current home. I grew up with a piano in the house, and LOVE to play any chance I get. I would love to have a keyboard to up the music ante in our home, and continue practicing...maybe even inspire a certain little mister to embrace the arts! I'm not toooo particular about which style or brand, but I do have some requirements when it comes to features. It MUST HAVE: 88 weighted keys, 128 key polyphony, a pedal, headphone output, decent speakers, and preferably be white with a white stand since the wall I would put it on is white, but I'd be OK with black too. I'm sure that the lovely people at Midwest Piano could help to find just the perfect one. :)

The Big Ticket // Surprise weekend getaway. A girl can dream right?!? I'd love to go to Seattle, Bar Harbor, Outer Banks, Charleston, New Orleans, New York City, San Francisco, Napa, Washington D.C....the list goes on...

First Birthday Wishes

Ahhh....one year is almost upon us. I can't believe how fast time has been going. In preparation for the big day, I've put together a little list of wishes for C's very first birthday. 

Burley Encore Duo Bike Trailer // After a great deal of research to find the perfect bike trailer for our family, we've landed on the Encore from Burley. We weren't able to ride bikes last summer with a newborn, and can't wait to take C for hopefully many rides in the future. This trailer has 100lb capacity, a cargo area for taking along a picnic, diaper, or overnight bag, and a second seat for another child to ride along. I don't think C has any idea how much fun this will be for our family! For safety, we picked up Bontrager's Little Dipper helmet designed specifically for kiddos ages 1-4. Next on the list? The Burley 2-wheel stroller kit for bike rides to the park this summer to enjoy some of the 125 events scheduled for the Arnold's Park 125th celebration!

B. Parum Pum Pum Drum // MUSIC! C loves his music table, and would no doubt have a great time exploring all of the musical instruments in this set. I'm sure the pint-sized tambourine would be quite the hit, and know he would love to explore and learn about all of the different musical instruments in this set. Keeping with the music theme, this Hape Pound & Tap Bench would be another great addition to help C learn about cause and effect relationships, and making his own music.

LeapFrog My Discovery House // This discovery house comes highly rated by other mamas out there, and has all kinds of bells and whistles for C to explore. He can learn to use a light switch, open and close doors, and ring the doorbell. Hours of exploration for sure!

Step2 Infant to Toddler Swing // Now that our yard is landscaped and officially a useable space, it would be wonderful to have this swing (and someone to help attach it) for under the deck when we are outside enjoying the fresh air. I particularly like that this is an infant-to-toddler swing that will grow with C, and has a more muted color scheme to go with our home than many other baby swings on the market.

Fisher Price Lil Movers Airplane // This airplane toy would be fun for C to explore and zoom around at home between trips. He is quite the little traveler, and will no doubt have an ongoing fascination with airplanes, not to mention he'd love playing with the little people inside.

Melissa & Doug Puzzles // To work on problem solving skills, these Melissa & Doug puzzles (here, here, and here) would be just the thing to get C thinking about things. This magnetic puzzle and latch puzzle would also be lots of fun when he gets a little further along into his one year old status.

Step2 WaterWheel Activity Play Table // This waterwheel activity play table would be so much fun for C to splash around in this summer. It won't be too long before he figures out furniture cruising, and he would have so much fun walking around this table and splashing the water or playing with the boats. It would be great for days that are too cold for full on swimming, but just right for outside play.

Corey Combine & Johnny Tractor Soft Vehicles // Last fall, on C's very first visit to John Deere to visit Grandpa T, he snagged this little Barney Backhoe soft vehicle toy. It is the perfect size for his little hands, and he has been loving driving it around and playing with it lately. It doesn't hurt that it also happens to be his favorite color, yellow. When cousin J opened the combine and tractor versions at his first birthday a couple of weeks ago, C was all about getting his hands on them. These would be the perfect additions to his toys for playing farm.

Joovy Tricycoo Tricycle & Joovy Noodle Helmet // This tricycle would no doubt become a fast favorite to wheel around on the sidewalk behind our house. It has foot pedals for C to rest his feet on before he is ready to pedal on his own, and can be steered from the the parent handlebar. The matching safety helmet would help to protect C from any tumbles as he gets bigger and has more independence. The greenie color would be the perfect gender neutral color so that it could be used for any kid who wanted to ride.

Books // C LOVES to read, and some new board books would be a great surprise for his birthday. Nothing specific in mind, but just ask if you have questions about what he already has!

Clothes // C, who is currently rocking 18mo clothing (as a 10 month old), is in need of some 24mo sized clothing for this summer. Speaking of clothes, bigger sizes for the coming fall would be welcome as well. As far as style goes, C likes to dress just like papa T and typically wears outfits that are relatively simple, and more 'little man' style than 'cutesy baby' style.

Christmas Wishes: A Lady's List

As for my list this year, I did not have as easy of a time coming up with it as lists for the boys in my life. Maybe I've been too busy with the whole parenting thing and couldn't find a good time to really sit down and give my list some serious thought, but after dedicating a few nap times to really consider what's on my list, this is what I came up with!

Sarah Chloe Elle Bangle // Since C arrived in our lives, I've wanted a piece of jewelry that I can wear on a daily basis that is a reminder of him. In lieu of a likely very expensive emerald stacker ring (his birthstone, and still on my list in case you're wondering), I'd love this sterling silver bracelet with the letter C monogrammed. This one would be the perfect gift for T...hint hint...

Spa Day // Speaking of T, he is not a giver of back rubs...super bummer...I begged him the other night, and he just told me he was too tired. Ugh. So since the last back rub I had was by a chair at the pedicure I got the day before C arrived (over 6 months ago!), I'd really REALLY like a massage and a pedicure at a day spa. You try carrying a nearly 20lb baby around day after day and tell me you wouldn't need a back rub at the end of it. Our local area seems to be somewhat lacking in the professional massage therapy and spa department, so suggestions are welcome...or T, if you're listening, a little weekend getaway to a spa resort someplace warm this winter would be great! I'd even take Minneapolis or Omaha!

Tommy Bahama Beaded Silver Sandals // I've had my eye on these sandals (size 9) now for quite a while, and think they'd be just the thing for warm weather. Obviously, that season is a long way off, but there's always a potential vacation on the horizon right?

All-Clad Double Burner Grill // Since grill season is a long way off, but we don't just become vegetarian during the winter months, I'd love to have an indoor grill pan that could be used on the stove or in the oven. This 20" x 13" All-Clad version would easily be able to fit a couple of steaks at a time plus grilled veggies, and would work great on the center burner on our stovetop. It's also rated up to 400 degrees for use in the oven when making a roast, and would be a great addition to the morning breakfast routine for preparing bacon, ham, sausage, or even pancakes for the whole family. Heck...I might even be able to convince T to cook on it! Double Burner...Double Bonus!

Treadmill or Indoor Exercise Bike // Getting to the gym is beyond difficult with a little one in tow. Our local YMCA offers day care services at set times throughout the day, but the fact that it's flu/cold season, and 'you-know-who' would likely NOT be volunteering to get up in the middle of the night to do any soothing if C picked up a bug, I'm not too crazy about taking him. It'd be nice to have a treadmill or indoor workout bike when we are stuck inside this winter so that we wouldn't have to spend an hour bundling up to brave the -20 temps in order to get a little exercise. While I love using the exercise bike at the gym, I think the treadmill probably offers a more versatile workout when we're at home. This version that has a supposedly quiet motor and folds would be great with our limited space.

29" Luggage // Now that C has joined our lives, traveling with just two carry-ons isn't very feasible. We'd love to have a couple of solid 29" suitcases to allow extra room for the kiddo's things on longer trips (or when we decide to leave town for longer than a week). Something with wheels and pockets such as Samsonite Silhouette Sphere or Delsey Helium Breeze would be great. On our latest trip, we used a hand-me-down no-name brand that basically fell apart before we got to the airport, so we'd like to stick to a proven luggage brand this time around.

Target Smith & Hawken Rectangle Baskets // We have a tiny laundry room that is always a mess. (I'm sure many of you can relate, and if it wasn't also the main entry from our garage, it wouldn't likely bother me as much...however it is, and it drives me crazy that it's always so disorganized!) I'd love to have three of these baskets (to be used for lights, darks, colors) to help better organize the chaos. Oh...and a shelf to hang above for all of our cookbooks that currently live on the laundry room countertop!

Illume Gilded Amberleaf Soy Candle // I absolutely LOVE my Illume Balsam & Cedar candles, and would love to try a new scent. The Gilded Amberleaf candle smells really nice, and is available locally at The Hen House...or at least was earlier this season...also available online via Illume.

Greenhouse Giftcard // Now that we actually have a real yard (grass, landscaping, plants!), a gift card to a local greenhouse (Fergusons/Dels/4Evergreen) would be just the ticket for picking out some beautiful flowers and maybe some new pots this spring. I absolutely LOVE peonies, and have the perfect spot all picked out for a new plant.

VS Flannel Sleep Shirt // I'm a sucker for new pajamas. I would love to have a cozy new flannel sleep shirt for the winter season. I love the versions with pants as well, but I get way too hot for comfortable sleeping. My favorite prints for a sleep shirt  are White/Red Plaid or Red/Black Glen Plaid.

Tervis 16 Oz. Tumbler // My everyday water glasses are not exactly lightweight, and I wouldn't mind having a few of these plastic insulated tumblers for indoor/outdoor use. I'd love the Sailboat or Iowa Hawkeye styles with lids to prevent major spills with C around! Have I mentioned his fascination with glasses lately?!

Baby's First Christmas Wish List

 A Christmas wish list for a little boy who will be just seven months old when Santa Claus comes to visit is pretty much one of the most exciting lists I'll put together all season. While C doesn't technically 'need' anything (aside from some new clothes) this is a little gathering of wishes of things we think he might have fun with in the upcoming months.

New Clothes // Probably the only thing on this year's Christmas list that is a must-have, new clothes! C has a closet full of outfits to get him through 12 months, but could use some good options in the 12-18 month size. He's currently wearing 9 month, or 6-12 month sizes, but I would expect it'll still be the middle of winter when we need a whole new wardrobe of 12-18 month size options as he's already nearing the top end of the length suggestions for the 6-12 month size. Now that C's a little older, we're not really into the cutesy outfits with things sewn on the butt, but like to dress our little dude just like the handsome little man he has become. If you can find a Daddy/Son matching combination, you will forever be held in high favor with T! A couple of our favorite places to shop for C are Baby Gap and J.Crew Crewcuts, with others scattered in there as well. Closer to home, The Three Sons actually has a surprisingly good selection of high-quality baby clothes where we've been able to score some pretty sweet duds. A few specifics on C's list this Christmas are this Fleece Footsie and Long-Sleeve One-Piece from J.Crew, and these Lined Pull-On Original Fit Jeans from Baby Gap. Pretty much anything from either of these stores would be sure to make a dapper little dude out of C.

Minnetonka Slippers // On all of our lists this year...the Minnetonka slipper. So warm and cozy for the winter months and perfect for keeping those tootsies from getting cold! These run big, so C would just need a size 2. Also available from J.Crew (size 6 months).

Hape Wonder Walker // C isn't walking yet, but likely will be sometime in the next 6 months. This activity walker would be so much fun with it's little puzzles and storage space for any additional toys he wants to load and unload and take with him on his walks.

Fisher-Price Go Baby Go Poppity-Pop Musical Dino // C loves to watch when T or I throw a ball around. This poppity-pop dino may be just the ticket to teach cause-and-effect and keep him entertained for a few hours.

IKEA Kallax Bookcase & Knipsa Storage Baskets // Since before C's arrival, we've been trying to find a way to get our hands on this eight-cube bookcase and four storage baskets from IKEA. Unfortunately, the shipping costs are astronomical, and the one time we've been near an IKEA since C joined us, our car was packed to the brim and we were unable to fit a single extra item with us. The bookcase and storage baskets would help to organize C's room, and make his books and toys easier to find and put away. Speaking of books, a few books we wouldn't mind adding to his collection are the board books Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, Corduroy, and University of Iowa 101. C LOVES to help read, so pages that he can help turn without ripping (A.K.A. board books) are key this Christmas. In an effort to control the sprawl, we aren't looking to add a bunch of random stories, but would prefer to stick to the classics, or books with beautiful illustrations, great stories, or subject matters close to our hearts. We have a pretty reasonable collection already, so if you are wondering if we've got a certain book, just check in with me! Regular paper books are great too...we can just store them until C is ready for them!

B. Zany Zoo Wooden Activity Cube // So many neat things to discover on this activity cube. Every time I'm at Target, I have to stop myself from adding this Zany Zoo to our toy collection. With five different surfaces of activities, this activity cube is sure to provide hours of entertainment.

Elegant Baby Bath Time Boat Squirties // I hesitate to introduce these squirties to our bath time routine as I'm sure they will lengthen the event, but C absolutely loves the bath already, and I imagine that the addition of some rubber boats to zoom around would make him one happy baby. When he is a little bigger, we'll likely add to the collection, but for now, these little boat squirties are just the right size for his small hands that are just learning how to grab for things.

Baby Einstein Discovering Music Table // C & I listen to music almost all day long most days, and since he was a newborn he has always loved music and dancing. This table has many different musical sounds to learn and discover and is sure to be a hit. The legs are removable so it will sit on the floor to play with before he learns to stand. Hooray for a grow-with-me toy!
